Giants bring an Opening Day starter back to roster as Chadwick Tromp hits injured list – Marin Independent Journal

Opening Day catcher Tyler Heineman is rejoining the San Francisco Giants for the final seven games of the regular season.

Heineman takes the place of backup catcher Chadwick Tromp, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a shoulder strain. Tromp injured his shoulder diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt in the Giants’ 14-2 win over the A’s on Sunday.

The Giants hoped Tromp would be healthy enough to catch starter Johnny Cueto on Monday against Colorado, but he was scratched from the lineup in favor of rookie Joey Bart and entered a 7-2 loss to the Rockies in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement.

A MRI on Tuesday showed Tromp had a shoulder strain, so he’ll miss the remainder of the regular season and Heineman will be back with the Giants for the first time in more than a month. Heineman signed with the Giants as a minor league free agent over the offseason and emerged as the favorite to start on Opening Day against the Dodgers after veteran Buster Posey announced he planned to sit out the 2020 season in July.

Heineman went 8-for-41 in 13 games with the Giants before being optioned to the Sacramento alternate site where he trained alongside 2020 first round draft choice Patrick Bailey and veteran minor league free agent Chris Herrmann.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Tuesday afternoon the club had yet to determine whether to promote Heineman or Herrmann to the active roster, but the organization announced its decision about 90 minutes prior to a scheduled 6:45 first pitch against the Rockies.

Herrmann is not on the Giants’ 40-man roster, but the 32-year-old has been on the taxi squad several times in recent weeks.

Kapler didn’t rule out the idea of Tromp returning to the team if the Giants make the postseason, but did not give a timeline for how long it’s expected to take Tromp to recover.
