The official name of the method is Brikam Yoga, which began in the United States and Canada 15 years ago and now comes to Brazil still embryonic. In an organized way, only Curitiba (in Paraná) has a network of Hot Yoga studios, but the “importer” of the technique for the country, Professor Adilson Pagan, evaluates that the modality will become popular.
“When I had contact with Brikam in 2001, I lived in the USA and there was only one international center of this type of Yoga. Today there are 50, scattered around the world, “says Pagan. “I’m sure it’s a matter of time before more people can be trained and expand Brikam in Brazil. But today important poles like São Paulo still do not count on specialized schools. ”
The rooms are pre-heated and practitioners, during 1h30 of class, repeat 26 positions of Yoga and two breathing exercises. Ideally, before class, the person should not eat for about two hours. Sweating is intense, in a process that the creators believe to be detoxifying. In addition, the high temperature requires more balance and concentration, making the caloric expenditure even more intense.
“In heat, the body responds more to the flexibility stimuli, which avoids injuries. In addition, it improves the respiratory capacity of the practitioner, “says the Brazilian professor. “Not to mention the awakening memories of the cells , since the idea is that the spaces reproduce the thermal comfort of the womb,” he adds.
Pagan claims Brikam’s main goal is not to lose weight, but the intensity of the practice ends up leading to weight loss. “I have students who in six months have eliminated 20 kilos. Not just for caloric expenditure, but for self-control that yoga also provides. ”

Energy and care
The ideal thing to do better is to practice “hot yoga” at least twice a week, a period necessary to replenish the flow of energy. Care is also required as it is not easy to position yourself in such a warm environment. Brikam’s own official website calls the “torture chambers” spaces.
The adaptation is not immediate and during the first classes are few students who can go to the end. “You have to respect the individual limit. This is also one of the lessons of Yoga, “says Adilson Pagan.
Caution comes with the advice of cardiologists. At high temperatures, the blood vessels are dilated and the blood pressure is deregulated. This sudden drop can cause fainting and dehydration. Therefore, extremely light clothes and bottles of water and isotonics are released during classes.
